Samenvatting
Het is virtueel zeker dat de mens de oorzaak is van de huidige klimaatcrisis. Het aanwenden van fossiele brandstoffen voor energiewinning heeft cumulatief 2500 gigaton CO2 in de natuur gepompt en doet het broeikaseffect toenemen, met opwarming en extreem weer tot gevolg. Hittegolven, zondvloeden, overstromingen, orkanen, droogte, zeespiegelstijging, oceaanverzuring en bosbranden zijn de tekens van het klimaatdrama. Ze teisteren alle regio’s van de aarde en schaden de biodiversiteit, de ecosystemen en de menselijke gezondheid. Mensen hebben goede intenties om de klimaatcrisis te beheersen maar schieten ruimschoots tekort in daadkracht en tempo. De sense of urgency ontbreekt. Mensen zijn blijkbaar niet voorbereid om catastrofen die ver in de toekomst liggen tijdig aan te pakken. ‘We hebben nog tijd’ of ‘we doen al zo veel’ is de uitvlucht om bij het status quo te blijven. Anderen klampen zich vast aan het kapitalistisch systeem en de economische groei, en weigeren in te zien dat het juist die twee systemen zijn die het klimaatprobleem bestendigen.
VN secretaris-generaal waarschuwt: "Time is no longer on our side". Vandaar de titel van dit boek: Mayday! Mayday! voor het Klimaat.
Over Carl Denef
The author is a retired Professor from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Leuven, Belgium. In 2009 he became concerned with the extremely thorny issues of modern society, namely the threats of anthropogenic climate change, the rising danger of nuclear bomb use, a damaged environment and a rise of social inequality as a consequence of an unfit global economy that privileges the wealthy class. He is of the opinion that scientists who have the privilege to know have the duty to act and try to participate in society's efforts for change. Scientists are becoming so isolated in their ever-narrowing small field of research that they have difficulties in developing a critical view of the social issues that are relevant today. He hopes that the ideas exposed in this book can bring understandable insights in the potential catastrophes that threaten everyone on this Planet.
