Samenvatting
Coronavirus, African Swine Fever, Bovine Leukemia Virus, Avian Leukemia Virus are all uncontrollable phenomena. More than 300 million farm animals in the EU spend their entire life in a cage. The coronavirus pandemic and the worldwide lock down has shown how fragile society really is. Is a pig who suffocates chokingly dead less important than a human who dies chokingly. It is not an animal activist who speaks here, but a doctor who is looking for a solution. Meat and dairy consumption continue to rise worldwide, wiping away wildlands, bringing us into contact with potentially dangerous viruses. The world is turned upside down and our knowledge and insights are increasing rapidly.
Annual vaccination of vulnerable groups against Influenza Avian to protect against viruses from the poultry industry and also a vaccination against annually changing Coronavirus strains to protect against viruses from the meat industry is not sufficient. More will have to be done, for example the production of cultured meat, the better solution for climate change and emerging pandemics.
Over Peter Holst MD PhD
Dr. Peter Holst worked until 1984 as a general practitioner in The Hague area, the Netherlands, and then worked for 20 years as a specialist in working conditions, lifestyle, indoor air and environmental factors. With support from the Dutch Prevention Fund and with the cooperation of several pulmonologists he did studies of new cancer cases in the Hague Hospitals. From 1987 he defended the thesis that in lung cancer patients a connection can be established with keeping (especially raising) of tropical birds and pigeons. Holst was from 1991 a member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate. His interest in the link between breeding tropical birds and cancer has expanded to the health risks of intensive farming of poultry, pigs and cattle for consumption. Since the fifties of the 20th century, intensive breeding and artificial insemination in livestock keeps pace with the recent increase in cancer mortality in Western Europe. In the last 50 years, diet has become increasingly unnatural.
