Samenvatting
Het begon in 1885, toen koning Leopold II het Congobekken als privédomein kreeg op de Conferentie van Berlijn. Miljoenen Congolezen bezweken onder zijn kapitalistische vraatzucht. In 1908 nam de Belgische staat het gebied onder haar hoede en buitte het land verder uit. Op 30 juni 1960 kwam de onafhankelijkheid in alle haasten. Vijf dagen later heerste er al chaos. De CIA bemoeide zich. Lumumba werd vermoord en Dag Hammarskjöld ’s vliegtuig neergeschoten. UN Vredeshandhavers probeerden tevergeefs de orde te herstellen. Met westerse steun pleegde Mobutu in 1965 een staatsgreep en vestigde er voor 32 jaar een dictatuur. Nadien kwamen Laurent Kabila en zijn zoon Joseph, die zich verrijkten en het land verder lieten wegkwijnen. In 1994 was er de genocide in Rwanda die een miljoen slachtoffers maakte en volgden er twee burgeroorlogen aangedreven door proxy’s uit het Afrikaanse continent. In 2003 kwam er vrede op papier. Oorlog werd commercie van ‘conflictmineralen’ en tientallen militiebendes werkten voor eigengewin. Congo werd gedurende 135 jaar leeggeplunderd. Het wordt tijd dat we ons vragen stellen over onze socio-economische dogma’s en vraatzucht. Of kijken we liever weg?
Over Carl Denef
The author is a retired Professor from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Leuven, Belgium. In 2009 he became concerned with the extremely thorny issues of modern society, namely the threats of anthropogenic climate change, the rising danger of nuclear bomb use, a damaged environment and a rise of social inequality as a consequence of an unfit global economy that privileges the wealthy class. He is of the opinion that scientists who have the privilege to know have the duty to act and try to participate in society's efforts for change. Scientists are becoming so isolated in their ever-narrowing small field of research that they have difficulties in developing a critical view of the social issues that are relevant today. He hopes that the ideas exposed in this book can bring understandable insights in the potential catastrophes that threaten everyone on this Planet.
