Samenvatting
Gafouré is an ancient river spirit from the Niger river delta. Since times immemorial he has been the guardian of all living creatures in this earthly paradise.
However, when two of his protégés get captured by slave traders and are being sold to work on plantations in the America's, his world gets torn apart. He decides to follow them to the other side of the world.
Three generations later he manages to help them escape to the young Kingdom of the Netherlands, but even here they remain haunted by racism and discrimination for another 70 years.
When they finally seem to get settled in Europe, W.W. I and a few years later W.W. II break out and Gafouré decides to on a search for a way back to Africa.
To reach this goal, he whispers the stories of his ancestors in the ears of young actor/musician Efjay, one of the descendants of the former slaves.
Are his stories truthful, however...?
Efjay tries to find out what's true and what's not, and in the process writes down all the songs that his ancestral spirit sings to him.
Gafouré, Songs of an African Angel is his first autobiografical novel in English.
Over F. Driessen
F. Driessen is sinds 1983 de 'Nom de Plûme' van Acteur/Musicus Felix-Jan Kuypers. Hij studeerde Nederlandse Taal en Letterkunde aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (1977-1978), volgde de acteursopleiding aan de Toneelakademie te Maastricht (1979 t/m '81) en studeerde daarna Engelse Taal en Letterkunde (1981-1982) en Antropologie en Niet-Westerse Sociologie (1991 t/m 1994) aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
In de periode 1974 t/m 2015 leverde hij tekstbijdragen voor 52 theatervoorstellingen en schreef hij 5 korte en 2 lange speelfilm-scenarios.
In 2013 begon hij met het schrijven van romans. Zijn eerste twee boeken, "De Hoofdrolspeler" (2015), ISBN: 978946254384 en "Gafouré, De Zang van de Zwarte Engel" (2016), ISBN: 978463184281, werden gepubliceerd bij het self-publishing platform mijnbestseller.nl.
De Nouvelle "Te Dicht bij de Zon", over zijn veel te jong overleden jeugdliefde Esther Kroon (1966-1992), is zijn derde autobiografische verhaal in boekvorm.
In maart 2021 publiceerde hij tevens zijn tijdens de Corona-tijd gemaakte vertaling van "Gafouré, De zang van de Zwarte Engel" naar het Engels, onder de titel "Gafouré, Songs of an African Angel" ISBN: 9789464186703
