Why do interventions that work in one group fail in another that seems identical? This questionsparked a journey into the heart of collaboration. Born from the Dutch De aggregatiemens (2014), this book is more than a translation. It’s a reimagined exploration of how groups truly function: not as collections of individuals, but as distinct states where perceptions, ideas, and actions merge into something greater than their parts. Existing theories often explain collaboration from either the micro-level (psychology) or macro-level (systems), but the most critical space—the meso-level—remains overlooked. Here, collaboration is neither reducible to individuals nor fully explained by institutions. This book fills that gap. It introduces aggregation, the process by which individual contributions stabilize into shared convictions, knowledge, and actions—emergent structures that shape group behavior in ways we rarely notice. This work offers a framework to understand—and influence—collaboration with precision, revealing how collective order forms, distorts, and transforms. Ultimately, it’s not just about groups.
