Synopsis
Dr. Mason is writing again.
His new patient is Daniel Brandt, a former Marine sergeant who has not slept properly in seven years. Daniel counts exits before entering a room. He wears a jacket in June. And his memory of what happened in Fallujah in 2004 does not match the official record.
No one has ever believed him. Not the military. Not the courts. Not his brother Thomas, who was there.
Dr. Mason has never treated a patient like this before. He begins learning EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing a therapy endorsed by the World Health Organization that does not ask patients to talk about their trauma. It asks their brain to finish processing what it could not finish at the time.
But Daniel does not want the pain to go away. Because if the pain goes away, it means he has accepted the lie. And the lie is the only thing he is still fighting for.
Restless is the second book in The Story of Therapy series and can be read as a standalone. Like Hopeless, the first book, it shows how therapy works from the inside, not as a technique, but as a human encounter. And like Hopeless, it teaches you something real about a therapy you may not have known existed.
