Samenvatting

Massive events called World Fairs or Expositions Universelles are being held in city after city. Millions attend. Monuments rise. Entire cities appear almost overnight. From London to Chicago, from Paris to San Francisco, these spectacles emerge as sudden bursts of architectural glory then vanish just as quickly. We are told they were temporary, built of plaster and fiber. Yet when we look closely, when we study the photographs, blueprints, and eyewitness reports… another possibility emerges: These weren’t temporary constructions. They were the final display of an ancient, inherited world soon to be erased. Monuments of Mystery The scale of these events is mind-bending. The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair known as the White City covered over 600 acres and housed more than 200 neoclassical buildings, canals, sculptures, fountains, and electric lights. The 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London was a colossal iron-and-glass structure, said to be built in under a year larger than any glass building before it. The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair sprawled across 1,200 acres, hosted 1,500 buildings, and drew nearly 20 million visitors. Each fair showcased structures of immense beauty and complex
